How to Play the Guitar For Free and Guitar Startup Tips

So you want to spend your wad on a guitar and become a rock star or just strum and be the local troubadour. My first advice on guitars. Don’t invest a ton of money in your first guitar. Just because you spend $1,500 on a custom Les Paul doesn’t mean it’ll make you play any better. Playing the guitar is about method and theory, not about how cool you look in front of your mirror admiring yourself. I’d say I’ve seen 60-70% of most guitars end up on ebay, craigslist or yard sales because Jo Shmo finally figured out that playing guitar is something you really have to work hard and spend on time to learn.

Now Jo’s guitar becomes a great bargain to buy at a low price. You see, guitars are like cars, as soon as you leave the guitar shop their value drops by 50%. Another good place to buy guitars is from a pawn shop. All my guitars come from pawnshops. You see, around April, pawnshops are looking to reduce their inventory for taxes. Give them a ridiculous offer on whatever interests you and I’m sure you’ll walk away with great value. That’s because Jo Shmo took his $1500 Les Paul and Guido gave him a measly $500 for it, Jo couldn’t finish paying him back so Guido kept the guitar and just needs to catch up the $102.87 he took out and the figures get $300 double his investment. I’ve personally scored a classic 70s Gibson Victory Bass and an old school Platinum Series BC Rich Bich (back when they were still made in the USA) for less than $150. So have fun and haggle!

My best advice would be to spend a modest amount on that first guitar ($200-300) and then a modest amount for lessons. By far, having a real live guitar teacher is the best method to learn how to play, but at $35 an hour for a weekly lesson, you can break the bank in no time.

Since the first steps in guitar playing are more involved in learning theory and technique, I would strongly suggest investing in books (but they can be BORING) or even better than a real person on video lessons. You’ll probably find that you prefer this because you can stop along the way and repeat as many times as you need to learn what you want, when you want. And why not start FREE (see links below), it’s even better. If a guitar video system isn’t willing to give you some early lessons, I’d say skip that one and move on to one that will. These first steps are basic and EVERYONE should take them. Most of the methods at this level are very similar, it is the intermediate to advanced level courses that will cost you. But learning doesn’t have to be expensive, research and find a video guitar learning program that meets your needs. And SAVE that money when you learn more about a guitar’s features and what you really like and need to play.

I have found Ben Edwards JAMORAMA to be a great place to start learning guitar. A simple, no-frills approach from a great guitar teacher. Ben offers electrical and acoustical courses that are incredibly inexpensive considering the cost of real teacher courses. Try a 6 session course absolutely FREE!
