Organic Gardening – Can Mosquito Larvae Breed in Manure Tea?
Alright, so you started doing the tea thing with the buckets full of manure with water on them. But you started wondering – is it possible for mosquitoes to breed in tea?
Well, the truth is that mosquitoes need surface tension in order to lay eggs. The bubbling water created by aerating the tea should generally prevent mosquitoes from laying their eggs inside.
But what happens if you don’t aerate the tea? Well, if you don’t aerate, you create a concoction that will encourage anaerobic organisms such as fecal coliforms and E coli. Since anaerobes do not exhale carbon dioxide but exhale sulfurs, methanes, and alcohols, you will end up creating ammoniacal and alcoholic acid mixtures that will burn your plants and possibly promote the growth of pathogenic bacteria.
The best rule to follow when it comes to compost tea is: if it smells bad, don’t use it. Even if it smells a little bad (sulphurous, alcoholic, ammoniacal, etc.), you really shouldn’t use it on your plants because it will do more harm than good.
If you end up with bad tea like this, you can put it on the compost heap, as long as you keep turning it daily until the smell is gone.
As with all successful organic gardening, there is a right way and a wrong way to compost. If you do it right, you can expect lots of great fresh vegetables to dig up and eat later.
