What Is "The Mosquito Disease"?
What is “mosquito disease”? It depends on who you ask and where that person is. In the United States, the mosquito disease is West Nile virus. If you live in Africa, it’s malaria. If you live in Central America, the mosquito disease is probably dengue fever.
All these dangerous diseases are transmitted by mosquitoes. These little bloodsuckers must have a blood meal to reproduce so they will “bite” an unsuspecting victim for food. But it really isn’t a bite as they suck blood through a straw-like mouthpiece. While they are draining us of our blood, they are injecting an anticoagulant to keep the blood circulating and this injected serum is what the victims react to. Most people have a minor, itchy, itchy bump that takes a few days to a week to go away.
Any creature that enters your blood pool before and after entering another is likely to transmit bad things between victims. And this little winged parasite that multiplies with abandon eating humans at every opportunity can easily infest dozens of people in no time. Therefore, mosquitoes have earned the title of the deadliest creature in the world, as they are responsible for more deaths worldwide than all wars combined. It is a serious disease.
Again, in the United States, the disease associated with “skeeters” is West Nile virus. Luckily for us, that’s certainly the least of the disease options, but it’s also a function of access to education and health care. In a third world country, West Nile virus would cause far greater deaths. But we cannot ignore the potential dangers as cases of extreme illnesses and deaths caused by West Nile virus are increasing every year.
The key to fighting mosquito disease is to prevent bites in the first place. Below are some quick ways to prevent exposure to mosquito disease in your life.
• Empty all sources of standing water outdoors. These blood-loving creatures only need a mere tablespoon to breed, so make sure there’s no standing water to provide an opportunity.
• Mosquitoes are attracted to body odors and perfumes as well as the carbon dioxide we emit when we exhale. You can’t stop breathing, but you can minimize the delicious smell you might have. Wash regularly because as silly as it may sound, the worse your feet smell, the more they love you! But beware of scented deodorants, perfumes, lotions, aftershaves, etc., as many of these products use synthetic fragrances that mosquitoes love.
• If you venture outside during peak mosquito times of dawn and dusk, consider wearing long-sleeved shirts and pants.
• Use safe and effective repellents to create a bubble of protection.
Make sure your repellents are safe and don’t contain synthetic pesticides. You want to avoid mosquito diseases and many of the products you can use are worse than the diseases themselves.
