Housebreaking A Backsliding Puppy Or Dog

Burglary leads the pack as the topic I get the most questions about, hands down. The key really is to make sure that you follow a consistent plan. Consistency will make housebreaking your dog or puppy as easy as possible. However, burglary is still difficult. And it’s not something you’re going to accomplish overnight, or even in a week, despite some of the advertisements you may see online stating that you can. Burglary is a process. Your dog must learn through conditioning where he is and where it is not appropriate to go potty.

Even if you follow all the steps, you can still encounter unexpected setbacks in the housebreaking process, such as when your dog starts using the indoor bathroom again after he apparently had a solid housebreaking or when your dog begins to use the bathroom in his crate. There are different processes for dealing with these issues, so I’m going to cover them separately, starting with dealing with a dog that started defecating indoors after you thought it was completely potty trained.

Before diving into housebreaking, keep this in mind…even the best-trained dogs will have accidents. The goal is for it to be so occasional that you don’t remember 2 of the last 3 times it happened. Even my 11 year old dog surprised me a few months ago with a small gift that leaked near my backdoor after being broken into for a decade! In this case, the accident was totally my fault. I was out of town overnight and she had nowhere to go. Keep this in mind when potty training your dog or puppy because a single accident doesn’t necessarily mean your dog has completely relapsed. However, if you are dealing with accident number 2 or more in a short period of time, you should take action immediately to avoid any further issues.

The common reasoning I hear from owners when their dog begins to back down in potty training is that the dog is angry, or is doing it out of spite, or to “revenge” the owner for an injustice done to them. . I am also guilty of having had these thoughts before, but the quickest way to find a solution is to drop this line of thinking and adopt the mantra that your dog does nothing out of spite or hatred of you. . Dogs generally want their owners to be happy. They are pack animals and they want to be in a happy, cohesive pack. They also don’t have the same feelings as a human and they don’t hold grudges or act out of spite.

It’s actually quite simple…from a dog’s point of view. He thinks he’s supposed to come into the house now…he’s done it so many times now without correction (or with the wrong kind of correction).

This means that when you cannot supervise your dog, he should be crated or confined so he does not have any accidents and he should have very limited access to roam freely around the house until that you recover the burglary. Here is the specific strategy for dealing with burglary issues:

1. Attach your dog to a leash attached to your belt or to a piece of furniture so that he is never out of your sight.

2. Keep a watchful eye and learn to tell when your dog reaches the maximum potty threshold. Typically, a lot of ground sniffing happens just before a crash. Watch your dog!

3. When you see your dog leaning (or squatting) into that classic “I’m going to potty” JUMP pose (even if you’re standing), clap your hands to get your dog’s attention, say ” Ah-Ah” in a clear, firm voice (no need to sound hysterical here, the idea is to surprise your dog into paying attention to you rather than grooming).

4. Using the leash, guide your dog outside. Pick up your dog if you need to get him out quickly.

5. Encourage your dog with gentle praise and smiles to relieve himself once you’re outside. Praise your dog generously with treats and hugs and love to finish outside. This is what you want.

The “Ah-Ah” was enough to stop my Sheltie long enough for me to get her out. Then I would coax her with a smile and a friendly “potty time” command until she went potty OUTSIDE. Then it’s time for lots of praise and even some treats if you have some on hand. Do this a few times and your dog will understand that pottying should only be done outside.

What I want you to take away from this strategy is that you shouldn’t just focus on punishing your dog for using the indoor bathroom. In fact, the only time you should even scold them for it is when you catch them in the act (with the “Ah-Ah” or a firm “No”). Punishing your dog after the fact, even 3 minutes later, won’t work.

Your dog will NOT, I repeat, will NOT make the association between what he did even 2 minutes ago (namely, poop inside) and you ranting and raving and poking his nose in a mess.

Clean up the mess, don’t let your dog see you clean it up, and be ready next time to catch your dog just as he’s squatting.

For a puppy, this process is even easier because they tend to be light enough that you can pick them up to carry outside. It’s a good way to get your pup out quickly before he’s finished pooping inside.

With my English Bulldog, I encountered an unexpected problem that you may be experiencing yourself. Even with the firm “Ah-Ah” and the jumps, she wouldn’t/couldn’t stop pooping once she started. And that frustrated me to no end! But respect the process. Get your dog outside as quickly as possible and encourage him to do his business.

So show your dog where you want him to go potty when he needs to go potty. It reinforces the behavior faster. And make it beneficial for them to relieve themselves outside by showering them with love and treats when they do.
