Spring Smallmouth Bass Location and Jerk Bait Presentation

When the snow melts and lake and river temperatures begin to rise, it’s time to prepare for pre-spawning smallmouth bass. Hard-bodied or jointed jerk baits designed to be hung in the water are a great option this time of year, especially on windy, overcast days when the smallmouth seems to be most aggressive. Conversely, it seems that slower-moving weightless plastics seem to work best on calm, sunny days.

Tackle and Equipment: I typically use 3 rods rigged for jerk bait fishing.

  1. 7′ A medium fast action rod with a 5:1 or larger reel, Abu Garcia makes some excellent reels for jerk bait fishing. Line it up with a 15lb braid with a fluorocarbon leader and you have yourself a great setup for your larger hard baits and larger spinning lures.

  2. I love this setup on still sunny mornings. 6’3″ lightweight Quantum MXP rod, 4:1 reel, 10lb braid with 18 inch 8lb fluorocarbon leader. This is my choice for setting up a soft plastic jerk and a #3 and #4 wide gap and offset hooks, 1/64-1/32 oz weighted #3 offset hooks (optional).

  3. Daiwa 7ft Medium Spinning Rod with 4:1 or better spinning reel with 6lb fluorocarbon line. This is a wild card rod, in the past I have had success with this using weightless flukes as well as smaller hard bodied baits. What I have found is that since the fluorocarbon line sinks it tends to bring hard and soft plastic baits a bit deeper and the 6lb line has a better feel with lighter baits than the 10 lb baitcasting setup. If I could only pick one I’d take this one as I think it’s the most versatile but the other configurations are task specific.

Baits:

  1. Hard bodied baits – Husky Jerk #10, Floating Raps #7, Berkley Cutter 90 are excellent choices. Natural colors in clear waters and heavily fished areas, white, pearl, perch and chartreuse are spring winners in stained waters.

  2. Soft bodied baits – 5″ super fluke zoom, they just have great movement and seem to fish every other soft plastic bait I use. In recent years I have Berkley Gulp Alive, KVD and others have also released good quality texas rigged weedless these baits make spring dynamite.

Location

Spring is such a great time for the littlemouth because no other time of year is more predictable and so many big females are “stacked” in one place. Focusing on deep waterfall areas and 10-foot-deep indoor spawning areas with a gravel bottom and ground structure is a great place to start. Large, egg-laden females feed actively and may have multiple trophies sitting in the same small indentation or around the same stump. The smallmouth will spend most of the winter in 30 to 40 feet of water, then move into shallow flats just after the ice breaks out and until egg laying which usually begins when the temperature of the water reaches the mid to high 50s. All large flats in 8 to 15 feet of water next to 30 to 40 shelves are a great place to start. Look for a gravel bottom, often a nice pile of rocks or a stump that can hold 10 large females at this time of year.

Smallmouths often need to see the bait several times before deciding to strike if they are not actively feeding, so if you see a nice spot, make 3-4 casts before moving. When they feed and you catch one, be sure to return to the same spot as the large females are rarely alone at this time of year. It can be one of the funniest and fastest fishing of the year. When they feed, it’s not impossible to land five four-pound fish in ten casts.

When it’s overcast and windy, it seems to wiggle its little mouth and have the best bite. Whenever I use a jerk bait in the wind, I always use bigger and heavier hard baits. I also work the bait faster than with the soft plastics. Rapala Husky Jerk 10 is a favorite bait in these conditions, with white, chartreuse and pearly white being warm colors. I always check with a bait shop or online for hot colors on a particular body of water.

Soft plastics are an art form, and I will install them on calm, sunny days. I work the bait about 3-5 feet deep with longer pulls mixing in with short jerks. A key tip is to keep consistent slack in your line, especially when using the braided line setup, this will give the bait a more erratic dart motion and the jerks more realistic. Also use the line as a hit indicator, when you see the game is tight, fix this hook. I remember once a friend and I were in the same boat using the same colors and the same bait. The only difference was that it added a tiny bit of weight and worked the bait at a rate where it averaged 3 casts for every one of my casts. After 75 minutes there were 14 fish and there was 1 and I was averaging about 16″ per fish with a couple of four pounds, nineteen inches and smaller. The only difference was I had no no weight added and I was working the bait very slow, sometimes as slow as 4-6 seconds between actions This method is especially deadly on a calm, sunny morning, the little mouth isn’t as fidgety as it looks will be when the wind picks up but she’s always ready for an easy meal. It’s often the first lure I start with and the last I finish.

For the people who fish them, the spring smallmouth bass fishery is a class of its own. Using jerk and twitch baits is one of the most fun ways to catch them. Tight lines!
