Al Lewis Christmas Show, Featuring Jodie Marie
The sold-out signs for Al Lewis and Friends’ third annual Christmas pageant went up a few days ago and there couldn’t have been a greater sense of anticipation in the December air, even if organizer Francis Brown had risen to announce that Santa Claus himself had been added. to the invoice at the very last minute. True believers in the magic of Christmas have been drawn from the warm shelter of their own homes on a crisp winter’s night by the prospect of hearing good music and, perhaps, also by the happy thought of catch up with old friends during the holiday season.
Jodie Marie opened the show with an immaculate set of intense and passionate numbers from her outstanding sophomore album Trouble in Mind, featuring a trio of searing ballads “Everyone Makes Mistakes” “For Your Love” and “I Miss You” and a brand new song documenting the ravages of alcoholism tentatively titled “The Answer” which, and this is the highest praise I can give, would not have been out of place on the album itself. The atmosphere and acoustics of St John the Evangelist Church provided the perfect setting for what was a stellar performance!
Next, Lewis and Leigh, with a sample of songs from their three critically acclaimed EPs. It was house Americana at its finest with tight harmonies paired with wise, witty songwriting. The tracks that stood out tonight were “Devil’s In the Detail” and “Rubble” from the Missing Years EP and, in particular, “Only Fifteen” from their latest release Hidden Truths. A minimalist take on “White Christmas” completed their sweet set in just the right way.
Gareth Bonello of The Gentle Good understood that he wasn’t really making Christmas songs, however, he managed to maintain the Christmas cheer with heartwarming and humorous rhythms between the songs in a genuinely moving set that has, after everything included a batch of instrumental Welsh chants as well as songs from his album Y Bardd Anfarwol fusing Chinese and Welsh folk music to intriguing effect.
The Al Lewis Band closed the evening with a blast of folk-rock in a set that included ‘The Arsonist’, ‘Heulwen O Hiraeth’ and their original Christmas composition ‘A Child’s Christmas in Wales’. For the encore, Lewis donned a Santa costume (unless, of course, it’s actually Santa Claus himself – hey, a few glasses of mulled wine can do that to you!) for an ensemble cover. of “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” which had a receptive audience, eager to show their goodwill, standing up and singing happily.
Earlier in the evening, Al Lewis had promised the congregation that they would leave his show filled with Christmas spirit; whether it was the camaraderie music, the religious setting, the main man’s daring Christmas sweater, the homemade pies or the generous offer of mulled wine, that’s exactly what he achieved.
