Huabiao – The Ornamental Pillar Of China
Huabiao is an ornamental pillar from China in marble with engraving of dragons and twisted clouds. This pillar was used as a decoration in important buildings in ancient China. In fact, a Huabiao can be seen right in front of Tiananmen in Beijing.
The origin of Huabiao dates back 4,000 years when Yao and Shun were the kings. They placed wooden columns along the roads to act as landmarks and signposts for travellers. However, there is another story circulating about the origin of Huabiao. As constructions became larger and more complex, stone Biaos were used. This eventually led to the Biao becoming part of the structure of the building itself. Today, the role of Biao or Huabiao is just ornamental.

The positioning of the animal heads is believed to serve to remind the emperor of the hopes and wishes of the people of his kingdom. The two Huabiaos in front face south, away from the palace. They are supposed to wait for the return of the emperor and are called Wangjungui. They were meant to remind the emperor when he was away from his palace too long. The two Huabiaos behind the gate face the palace and are called Wangjunchu. These remind the Emperor to get out of his palace and mingle with the common people so he can better understand their lives.
