What is Your Plan?
People continually ask me how I am able to accomplish all the things I do. To be honest, I sometimes wonder that myself. But, ultimately, I know it’s because I’m a planner.
To some degree, we are all multitaskers and have many responsibilities that can sometimes seem overwhelming. The key is to learn how to manage responsibility by planning for it. Believe it or not, daily activities are less stressful when you put a plan into action.
I have to admit that I like to plan.
It has not always been so. In fact, it wasn’t until the age of 24 that the need to plan really kicked in. I attended a training seminar on the Franklin (now Franklin-Covey) Scheduling System and that training gave me a gigantic light bulb moment (plus, the fact that I was doing commission sales didn’t make no harm either).
Sure, I had been successful so far, but I didn’t really have a plan in place. I enjoyed my radio career and was responsible for not only “selling the air”, but also filling it with clever texts. I had no idea where I would go from there.
Get into planning-mania…
I was so inspired by the Franklin system that I started charting my life in a way that I had never done before. I created a plan and within a year I had achieved goals that I hadn’t imagined possible before (and, of course, small changes happened along the way as well). As a single woman, at the age of 25, I bought my first house. My career has excelled. I quit the radio station and continued to pursue other interests. It was as if having a plan ignited my passion and drive.
Now, over 10 years later, I’m still planning and the rewards are just as beneficial. I continue to use the Franklin-Covey system but it’s not the only system I use. I’ve learned that you actually need to be exposed to a lot of different techniques and then tailor them specifically to your individual needs.
Planning can be fun when you approach it in fresh and new ways.
Here are some tips that have helped me in my professional and personal life and I’m sure they will help you too.
• Write your dreams down on paper and they will manifest faster (it really, really works!!!)
• Use some sort of scheduling system (try several until you find the one that works best for you.)
• Stop procrastinating and just start
• Visualize your end results to get where you want to be
• Remember that success is not an accident
One of the great things about plans is that they are constantly changing and as long as you have the big picture in mind you will easily adapt the plan to whatever comes your way and get maximum hit. We may not be able to control everything that happens to us, but we can adapt and change to make sure we live our dreams.
