Be Your Own Hero!
There are many types of heroes in life – war heroes, super heroes, emergency service professionals. Have you ever considered yourself in this category?
If you’re like most people, you’ve gotten into the habit of moving far too quickly in your successes and accomplishments! This is strong conditioning for many of us who grew up in a time when it was not a good thing to talk well about yourself.

There are a few simple things you can do to build your sense of self-esteem and self-efficacy. I want to share some of my practices because I want you to build your confidence and courage when it comes to taking risks and trying new things both in business and in life.
1. I keep a card near my computer – a new one every Monday, dated this week. Every time I get a free email from a client, a card in the mail, a positive Facebook post, I add a one-line statement about it on the card. Every Friday I take about 5 minutes to read each statement, close my eyes after each one and just visualize what it looks and feels like. I “really take it all”. Then I add that particular card to my “hit box” – in which I have stacks of cards from the past year. When I’m having a bad day or just finished a disappointing phone call……or whatever, I grab this card from my desk and take a few minutes to wallow in the good stuff! I’ve kept these cards over the years – it’s fabulous to go back and see them again.
2. I journal every night. In this journal, I detail each day what went well, especially if I dealt with a difficult client or an intimidating new situation. I celebrate every part of these situations that went well – there’s always at least one thing!
3. I keep a vision board on my office wall throughout the year. Every time I accomplish something on my vision board, I put a little check mark on it. I take a few moments to celebrate this achievement. It builds confidence and courage to consider bigger risks and loftier dreams for the next year.
4. I share with my closest friends. I have a close circle of girlfriends who have a pretty good understanding of what I do every day in life. They recognize that there are challenges and setbacks in the work I do. They also encourage me when I take quantum leaps, try new things and succeed. It really boosts my confidence and courage when I get their positive feedback because I really value their opinion – and it’s great to have your own cheerleading squad!
5. I share my achievements in my public presentations, where and when appropriate. Being raised as a “good Catholic girl” hasn’t always been easy. What I have learned, from experience though, is that sharing my accomplishments is essential as it inspires other women to develop the confidence and courage to try some of these things…. …I’ve walked the path and they know it can be done.
6. I update my biography regularly and am sure to include my accomplishments. When prospects read about them, it makes them feel comfortable working with me as a coach and/or mental leader. It inspires confidence in them and assures them that they have made an excellent decision in working with me.
7. I post updates on Facebook and other social media. It gives messages of hope and encouragement to others to step up and develop the courage to try some of the things I have done. I was nominated for the 2010 RBC Canadian Woman Entrepreneur of the Year Award – Holy Crow – that’s quite an accomplishment and other female solopreneurs around me should know that this kind of recognition is possible!
It is so easy to go through our accomplishments and successes. Most of us have been conditioned not to think or speak well of ourselves – that’s bragging. Well, quite frankly, would YOU want to work with a coach or leader who has NOT experienced or shared accomplishments? I hope not. Do YOU want to show your children that it is essential to continue to grow, develop and become the best person you can be in life? It’s about building that internal sense of self-esteem and only you can do that – by internalizing all the things you’ve done well, by accepting the compliments you get, by daring to have a strong self-image. . Confidence and courage don’t just happen…and it doesn’t happen overnight…but, over time, you can become your own hero! Don’t wait for someone else to build you – start today.
1. Make a habit of keeping a card next to your computer – start today.
2. At the end of this week, take some time to stop, read what’s on the card, internalize all that good stuff – and file the card in your (new) Success Box!
3. Start again with another new card on Monday!
